About This Position

This position is accountable for overseeing the packaging warehouse facility, maintenance department, company safety programs, and Linpage distribution facility upkeep. Responsibilities include continuous improvement of warehousing, distribution and maintenance aspects of the packaging facility to meet production goals while ensuring GFSI, FDA and OSHA compliance. This position is expected to supervise the warehousing and maintenance staffs. In addition, they will be accountable for Project Management as self-directed or assigned including ongoing processes, operations and safety improvement, commissioning of new equipment and processes, and upkeep of all pertinent reports.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Ensure operations are contributing to the production and distribution of quality products, safely, efficiently, with minimal downtime and waste following GFSI, FDA and OSHA regulations.
  • Delivery of continuous improvement program for warehouse and maintenance departments to drive quality, safety, and other improvements.
  • Contribute to the development, identification, and dissemination of best practices for areas of responsibilities.
  • Identify gaps in processes, procedures, safety, and quality production. Work with team leads to close gaps and make improvements.
  • Maintain machinery in compliance with GFSI, OSHA and FDA guidelines.
  • Anticipate, log and communicate ongoing and future machinery or other equipment needs and concerns
  • Maintain and schedule outside services to include but not limited to:
    • Air compressors/ dryers
    • HVAC, Fire sprinkles and extinguishers, building maintenance.
    • Packaging Machinery
    • Forklifts/ floor scrubber
    • Facility security
    • Uniforms
    • Trash
    • Maintain backup generator and test as required for effectiveness.
    • Compressed gases and other outside service providers as directed.
  • Maintain buildings and production rooms in compliance with GFSI, OSHA, and FDA guidelines for daily production, repairs, and upgrades.
  • Coordinate with management team for record retention program and storage in warehouses.
  • Maintain up-to-date layouts of the facility, equipment, racking, HVAC, piping, electrical plans, fire suppression systems, etc.
  • Oversee the maintenance shop to ensure necessary tools and parts are stocked and ready to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure the shop is organized and all tolls and spare parts are tracked and inventoried on a monthly basis.
  • Oversee parts and service purchasing working within annual budget limits.
  • Develop an approved monthly, quarterly, and yearly budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Interview, hire, and train staff.
  • Mentor and train staff on OSHA programs, disaster preparedness, forklift certification and other necessary programs and safety practices.
  • Develop metrics for continuous improvement to include machine efficiencies, product waste and budgets.
  • Develop and implement electronic warehouse documentation processes.
  • Conduct personnel reviews in a timely manner.
  • Effectively manage all disciplinary issues in a professional manner.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing is in place daily to achieve goals.
  • Work with Production Team and Maintenance Staff to ensure all PM's and work orders are completed accurately, on time, with minimal downtime.
  • Confer with Production Managers to ensure machinery and production are coordinated to optimize quality and production.
  • Ensure Downtime Logs are completed accurately and on time.
  • Manage and keep accurate up-to-date records for maintenance staff for Repair Tickets, Daily Maintenance Logs, and Preventative Maintenance reports.
  • Analyze downtime, changeover, PM and waste. Develop and implement strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Keep Director of Packaging informed of any extended downtime or major mechanical issues.
  • Establish operational procedures for:
    • Changeovers
    • Preventative Maintenance
    • Lock/out Tag/out for repairs and cleaning of machines
    • Warehouse processes
  • Coordination and approval with Director of Packaging is required for the installation, and/or relocation of equipment.
  • Manage Capital Projects in the maintenance and warehouse departments as self-directed or assigned by Director of Packaging.
  • Assist the Director of Packaging in identifying and validating new equipment, raw materials and suppliers.
  • Create project documents i.e. calculations, reports, drawings, specifications, timeline, personnel, budget impact etc.
  • Maintain the source plan and clear accountability for the project team members.
  • Complete visits and/or audits of vendor facilities, machine facilities, and other manufacturing facilities as needed.
  • Ability to communicate professionally through both verbal and written interactions.
  • Participate in audits including but not limited to annual GFSI certification, vendor audits and any additional audits needed.
  • Ensure maintenance and warehouse departments are audit ready at all times.
  • Complete all miscellaneous responsibilities or duties as assigned by the Director of Packaging.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; minimum of 5 years of food plant supervisory experience.
  • Requires strong supervisory skills: a demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Have a positive, up-beat attitude and an ability to work well in a team environment and create a teamwork environment by communicating effectively between shift/department.
  • Strong PLC skills and knowledge in electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Familiar with Vertical and Horizontal Form/Fill/Seal equipment.
  • Knowledge of BOCA, NEC, OSHA, FDA guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of HACCP, SOP, SSOP, and SQF or GFSI requirements.
  • Experience in third party audit systems.
  • Ability to define problems and resolve them quickly.
  • Ability to work well with ever changing priorities and situations.
  • Able to prioritize workload on a daily basis.
  • Prefer ability to work all shifts, if needed.
  • PC proficient on Windows based software including Excel and Word.
  • Detail-oriented with strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Process oriented.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as a self-starter and often be self-directed.
  • Hands-on (small company oriented).
  • This position has supervision of direct reports and has supervisory responsibilities over the Maintenance, Production, Warehouse and Sanitation departments.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common machine manuals and technical specifications for equipment, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
